Leigh Court Farm ltd is a small business devoted to growing organic vegetables and fruit for a weekly box scheme and fresh food markets in Bristol. We are employee owned, so all of the permanent staff have shares in the enterprise and take on different management roles within the organisation. We have 4 permanent staff and employ a number of extra workers for the growing season. We have been gradually expanding our business and providing fresh produce to our customers, since 1999. Currently we deliver about 400 boxes each week and have regular stalls at Bristol's two major fresh food markets
We grew 20 acres of vegetables in 2009. In 2014 - with a recent acquisition of rented land in the Failand area - we are farming almost 30 acres in total. Production is spread out over 3 fields: the historic walled garden in Abbots Leigh, Portbury field, and the new land in Failand. The varied soil types and microclimates available on these different sites enable us to grow a wide range of crops. All our fields are within 5 miles of Bristol.
We are based in the grounds of Leigh Court estate at Abbots Leigh on the outskirts of Bristol. This is where our office, farm equipment and packing shed are situated. The 2 acre Victorian walled garden provides shelter and warmth which can extend the season a month earlier in spring and later in autumn. This is where we grow our intensive long season crops such as french beans, runner beans and courgettes which require regular watering and harvesting.
We also have 6 full size polytunnels -these allow us to grow more tender long season crops such as early french beans, cucumbers, basil, and masses of tomatoes! The rest of the site is comprised of an ancient orchard, 3 acres of woodland and a 3 acre paddock, which is home to the free range chickens.
